Project Life Feb 15-21

This entry into my Project Life book coincided with some pretty inspirational class material in Ali Edwards’  Storytelling with Project Life class.  There are different things going on this time,  more writing and dressing- up the pre-made cards a little.

It didn’t take that much more time and I love the results.  AND IT WAS FUN!  (This kind of memory keeping reminds me so much of the old style of scrapbooking, like when I was a little girl.  I just love the real life feel of it!)

It wasn’t an extraordinary week that I was recording here…  just normal stuff.  And I’ve come to the conclusion that that’s exactly what I was missing.

IMG_9211

When I started this spread I didn’t think I was going to have enough pictures to fill up the foundation pages, but I ended up wanting an insert to include everything.  (I HAD to document “The Walking Dead” and Carl getting his eye shot off…  YUCK!)

IMG_9214

I had already printed out the picture of the book cover because I knew I wanted to start documenting my current read.  (see below)  I just adhered two circular chipboard stickers to make the tab on the insert.  Sometimes I get tired of the plain, white Avery office tabs…  (not often though…)

I included another, slightly larger insert for my class notes from Ali’s Project Life writing assignments.  There are two pages of these.  I thought this was a great home for them.  Even though it was just several quick writing practices, it was fun stuff to document.

And below  is the final foundation page.  I’m making room for purely decorative cards now too.  If that means more inserts, so be it.  I want it to look pretty too.

And then down there in the corner…  not sure if you can read that little tab, it says, “Personal (turn)”.

IMG_9219

I had some personal documentation that I wanted to capture and remember.  (the nature of which is between a Mom and a Dad, but if my kids read it someday… that would be ok.)  I used a Snap photo flip for this and it was super easy to adhere and hides the personal journaling.

Oh boy, I almost didn’t even include the photograph below…  it hurts my head to look at a picture where the white balance is SO bad…  But the truth is, I was too busy to take the shot again and edit it again and I was dying to share!  These are some of the embellished cards that we made in Ali’s Project Life class.  I’m really happy with the look and confused as to why it never occurred to me to dress up these cards before…  I love the look of using all the middle pockets for documenting…  I may do that more often.  And stamping the days of the week on the cards and recording facts from each day:  LOVE IT.

This is the beginning of next week’s spread.  I have never assembled a spread as the week progressed.  I was always of the opinion that I wanted to wait and see what I had at the end of the week.  But I’m loving this process too!  Thank you, Ali.

I can’t wait to do spreads with themes this year too.  I’m planning to do a spread about our meals:  what we’re eating, what the boys are cooking, etc.  I might even focus on one family member at a time too.

I’m going to be doing a fun exchange with a friend soon too!  We’re going to be embellishing cards and creating cards to share with each other.  This is going to be fun!  I can’t wait, Jackie.  Going to play next week.

So that’s it this time.  I hope this finds you happy and enjoying the hell out of  life!

Peace!

Project Life – February

I’m taking Ali Edwards’ Project Life Storytelling class right now and I’m so inspired, looking at her books and hearing her process,  that I am dying to play!

One of the first things Ali suggests you do , up front, is to identify why you want to do this project.  My first thought (my usual self, avoiding introspection) was “because it’s fun… duh.”  And although, yes, it is fun, there’s much more to it than that.  I love the process.  I’m not eaten up with a burning desire to “tell my story” because I really question who would be interested.  But I want to document my story for me… because I like the process, because the process (the hobby) brings people together, because I like going back and looking at my books, because it’s fun.

My original idea was to do monthly spreads, but now I’ve just decided to do it whenever the mood strikes.  And it’s striking now!

As Ali has been walking through her albums with us, she’s mentioned a couple times that she’s gotten away from including the “stuff of life” on her pages.  I had noticed that in recent years and I missed it.  That’s one of the things I LOVE about my early Week in the Life albums – all the bits and pieces:  mail, receipts, pieces of shopping bags, kid art, shopping lists.  I love that stuff.  So I think Ali’s going to try to include more of that, I know I certainly am!  Things change in the blink of an eye as your children are growing up.  None of us stop to appreciate the idiosyncrasies and the lovely little oddities.  I know I won’t remember them… except for my documenting them here.

For instance, the fact that our boys love Low Sugar Instant Oatmeal.  But they really love it if I mix 2 Maple Brown Sugar flavors with 1 Apple and Cinnamon.  I’ve been making it this way for a while but it isn’t something I’ll remember, even 10 years from now, maybe.  It’s their favorite right now, eating it almost every morning.  I put the packaging from my current favorite tea in this spread also.

Below is the first insert.  I’ve always liked my inserts to be smaller than the real anchor pages.  (Ali mentioned this in one of her class videos.)  I like to be able to easily distinguish between different weeks.  So here’s the first insert – just pictures of the recent big snowfall we had.

The second insert for this week is the interview pages that I shared on Instagram and Facebook earlier this week.  I spotted an interview page in one of Ali’s books and realized that it’s been a while since I did one of these with the boys.  And…  they really enjoy filling them out.

And then here’s the final page for the week.  More ephemera from the packaging that Ali sends out and the little bag from Liz Lamoreux, where I bought my One Little Word bracelet this year.

In the past I’ve felt like the pictures were the star of the show.  And I’m not sure I agree with the value of LOTS of journaling.  (I mean really, who’s going to read pages and pages of stuff?)   I absolutely see value in documenting important feelings and details. And I love including the “stuff of life”!

IMG_9193

Right now I’m not sure when I’ll make another entry in this book…  probably next week because my birthday is coming up on Friday and we’ll be going to Colorado to celebrate with my Mom and Dad.  (I hear there’s going to be TWO DIFFERENT KINDS OF CHOCOLATE CAKE!!!!!)  My point being, there’ll be fun stuff going on that I want to document.

That being said, I’ve just been reminded (by Ali) that the glimpse of  everyday life that Project Life and Week in the Life offer is an absolute treasure!  Some of the most fun I have going back and looking at old albums are from our time in Iowa when I had two boys in diapers.  Reading about their likes and dislikes and seeing photographs of our traditions and preschool and habits.  There are sweet, little, unforgettable things in those books…  that I would have forgotten…

So I’m not sure how often I’ll contribute to this book, but I will contribute… because I love it.

One Little Word – February

I’ve been doing this project for several years now and I was pleasantly surprised at a completely new prompt for the month of February!  It’s a prompt that I really love too!  It provides daily accountability! (exactly something that I’m learning is invaluable to me!)

During the month I’ll be jotting down things on that Reflections card, (see image below) that have worked well and/or resonated with me throughout the month. And the white Practice February card will be replaced with a photograph – probably black and white and having something to do with meditation or maybe simply a picture of me in my meditation spot.

I finally received my teal album and moved everything out of the red one.  It feels much more PEACEFUL now!  Here are some updated pictures, because I tweaked several things.  I’m pleased with how it’s coming along so far.  I mean the process is the star of the show but I like my book to be pretty too!  Click on the images if you’d like to see them larger.

P.S. I’m trying out a new tool for composing blog posts.  Let me know what you think of the changes.

Project Life 2016

My plan right now is to do monthly layouts.  Weekly is too big a commitment for me but I want to do this!  I love this process!  I think this is a good compromise.  Below is my cover page for 2016.

IMG_9113

A lot happened in January but with the overwhelming event being the passing of a dear friend, everything else seemed a little numb.  Needless to say, I didn’t take many pictures the whole month.

IMG_9166

Below is the pamphlet they handed out at Thad’s memorial service.  Dammit to Hell, the whole situation just makes me so angry still!  It was difficult to print these photos and more difficult to try to write about it…

IMG_9167

We miss you so much, Thad.

IMG_9168

Later in the month, when the overwhelming sadness let up a bit, we were able to celebrate Will’s 15th birthday.  (we still owe him a day at Fort Fun.)  We made big strides in the building permit process for the cabin!  And…  I got a new car!  My Mom and Dad decided they didn’t need two cars anymore and gifted me this cute, little, sporty thing!  (I’ve always loved this little car!  It’s so much fun to drive and has my favorite thing ever, on any car…  A GIANT SUNROOF!)

IMG_9169

February will be much more joyful, with my birthday and Valentine’s Day and this huge snowstorm that we’re experiencing as I write this!  I’ll probably even use lots of pink!

Peace!
